No, there's no way I'm at the Tokyo Game Show right now. But I can imagine, thanks to IGN posting the download for the show's Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker demo! I'm only a bit in so far, having already completed the tutorial section of the game and watching a cut-scene, but right now I'm stuck, because the language barrier is tremendous.
What can I say right now though? The graphics, are awesome, I've seen worse released on PS2 and Wii if that means anything. Control-wise, Kojima somehow managed to map Metal Gear Solid 4's DualShock 3 control scheme onto the PSP, ditching Portable Ops' controls entirely; it's not full DualShock controls of course, what with the lack of 2nd analog and L2/R2, but it's close enough damnit!
But yeah, the entire demo is in Japanese, from menus to voice acting, so I haven't the slighest clue as to the story or what on Earth I'm supposed to do now. The tutorial, which was reasonably understandable only helped control wise, but in terms of objective I'm lost.
On another note, some cut-scenes are full in-game CGI, while the big stuff is comic style in the vein of what Ashley Wood did for Portable Ops. Oddly enough, the style of these scenes look's like Wood's at first, but then there's a bit of Yoji Shinkawa's style in there, and quite frankly I don't know who's art it really is... it'd be nice to get an answer on that.
When I figure out what to do, I'll update you!

Ashley Wood's Art of Metal Gear Solid review

First off, sorry about this one. I've had the book for about the whole summer, but because it was to be VFH's first artbook review I just had no idea how to make a write up for it. I mean, its not like a comic where you can judge the story or anything, it's just images. So, this is a different type of review than you may be used to here...

There's a lot of nice things about Ashley Wood's Art of Metal Gear Solid; of course, it's both Ashley Wood's art and it's all Metal Gear, so that pretty much makes it awesome to begin with. But in all seriousness, for a paperback book, it's printed quite nicely; I'd of preferred the stellar hardcover treatment that Sons of Liberty got, but this works.
And while the digital and traditionally made art work for the first two series is nice, the main attraction here was definitely being able to view Portable Ops' cut-scenes in still form for the first time. To be honest, after constantly looking at the MPO artwork in this book, I actually think it's some of Wood's best work in the series to date. Here's to hoping he gets hired for a Snake Eater or Guns of the Patriots series...
Cons
While the artwork in the book is beyond phenomenal, and has 120 pages full of my favorite artist drawing my favorite game series, there are parts of the book that really bothered me. The main kicker? Organization. While, more or less, the final third of the book is completely dedicated to showcasing Portable Ops, the beginning of the book is just a mess.

Overall
Despite the jumbled mess, the artwork is fantastic, there's no denying that. If you're a fan of either Ashley Wood's artwork, or the Metal Gear series, or both, than there's no excuse not to get this. However, if you've yet to experience MGS in comic form, I suggest you find yourself some copies of The Complete Metal Gear Solid and The Complete Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty instead, and then maybe pick this book up. And while the main attraction, at least for myself, was the Portable Ops artwork finally in print, I did notice that there was some missing pieces. And quite frankly, I'd of much rather purchased a dedicated Ashley Wood's Art of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops instead, so that I would actually know what to expect.
Overall Score: 8/10

Kojima teaser site shows another face
When the Kojima teaser site last updated, we were treated to an image of Big Boss. This time around we are given another familiar face ... or is it?

Personally I think it's Raiden; I mean ... it's extremely obvious that it is him because the armor and jaw is the same as it was in Metal Gear Solid 4. But there's some nay-sayers on the internet claiming it to be a Grey Fox, future Sunny or another woman. First off, if you played Portable Ops, you'd know Grey Fox looks nothing like that; and as for Sunny or a woman in general ... I know Raiden is a little feminine looking, but seriously, give the man a break.
My guess at this point, is that what we're seeing now is for a Metal Gear Solid 4 DLC expansion(s); which will feature two different stories from the past. One being from the perspective of young Big Boss, the other from Raiden's point of view after MGS2 until the events of MGS4. Why? Because there's still more to say about Big Boss's past, and Raiden cyborg suit there looks to be at a transitional state from how he finally looks in MGS4, and we never actually see how he comes to be that way.
Just a hunch, but E3 can't come any sooner!

Kojima teaser site finally makes things very obvious
I'll be honest, it was pretty hard to keep quite when Kojima Productions' "Next" teaser site went live. But I refrained from speculating flashing letters, mysterious clouds, and lightning storms here on VFH. But now, one of those flashes makes everything painfully obvious:

Yes, that's Big Boss (or Naked Snake) right there. No doubt about it. As for what this means in terms of consoles is a whole other realm of speculation, but there's no doubting at this point that Kojima's next title is part of Metal Gear. As an open Metal Gear fanboy, I'm excited to say the least. E3 can't come any sooner!

Metal Gear Solid Touch Review

Going into the game, you have to know that it is a simple shooter, where you don’t have control of character movement, but simply the ability to shoot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and the controls work fairly well. You cannot simply tap and shoot where you tap, but instead, have to move a cursor around the screen, which has its ups and downs, but overall works competently. The cursor will stay wherever you leave it, so you can always see it and always know where you are aiming. Once you have it where you want it, you simply tap to shoot. This is a bit of an issue when you need to move around the cursor speedily to hit a moving target, and it is a bit awkward how you can’t hold down your finger to use an “automatic” weapon, so you only have single-shot. If a target is too far away, you will have to pull out your sniper rifle, which is easily done in the same was you zoom in on a web page or picture on the device; by pinching, which will switch back and forth between your sniper and assault rifles. Also of importance is the fact that while you are shooting or have your finger on the screen, you are vulnerable to attack, but once you let go, you get behind cover and very slowly replenish your health.

The game, currently, is composed of 12 missions, each of which take place in a different location and follow the story of MGS4. Most of these missions simply have you shooting a certain number of regular enemies, while not shooting allies, however, two of the missions are boss battles. The first pits you against Laughing Octopus, trying to find her even though she has that stealth camo. The second boss battle features Raging Raven, who flies around the screen. Raging Raven is, I believe, the only level that features moving enemies, and so it’s a good challenge and a nice change of pace from rather static environments and characters.

These points can be used in Drebin’s Shop to purchase backgrounds and MGS art. There are 15 of these images to get, which will require multiple playthroughs to get enough points, and you can supposedly use these for your device’s background image. I’ve tried to do this, to use the image, but I could not figure out how, but it’s supposedly possible.
Overall, Metal Gear Solid Touch had some potential, and still does as there is going to be free DLC, but right now, I can’t recommend it too highly. The game is very short and very simple. The graphics and presentation or rather good, but that doesn’t make up for the fact that the game is just too simple, with nothing really make it Metal Gear material. Hopefully the future levels will add a new dimension to the game, but you could probably hold off until then.
Overall Score: 6.5/10

Another Mega64 classic?
If thought Mega64's encounter with Shigeru Miyamoto was an amusing piece of internet "cinematography", wait till you see their latest effort:
Yes, that's Mr. Hideo Kojima, who unlike Mr. Miyamoto, gets in on the action. Also, Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski also makes a brief camero... but c'mon Hideo Kojima acting stealthy? That's priceless!

Metal Gear Solid Touch trailer
No longer in the form of cryptic messages, Konami is finally releasing more about Metal Gear Solid Touch. The game, as we know now, is an on-rails shooter retelling the story of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Below is a trailer for the title, but be warned, it contains some spoilers of MGS4 (for those of you who haven't played yet).
Personally, I think it moves very stiffly, but I guess that's to be expected when it's essentially a lengthy port of a flash game.

Have we played MGS Touch before?
It just may be so, soon after reviewing the two released screenshots of Metal Gear Solid Touch, I noticed something. The gameplay looks shockingly familiar to an unlockable Flash game (Special Mission: 02) at the Metal Gear Solid 4 website.

Top: The Flash game; Bottom: MGS Touch

Top: The Flash game; Bottom: MGS Touch
The Flash game is a point and click shooter; which would make plenty of sense for a touch screen transfer, I just hope it's not the same game because that would be a really cheep move by both Konami and Kojima for having viral marketing for a game we've already played. Sure, the interface graphics are a little different, but it's still far too similar. Hopefully, some answers will come soon.

i + ! = Metal Gear Solid Touch
A Next Metal Gear Is ... an iPhone game. I mean, I can't say I saw this coming, but it certainly makes sense; the teaser page's URL had "MGST" in it, now standing for Metal Gear Solid Touch. And the little equation makes some sense too; "i" as in iPhone, "!" is very much an MGS associated symbol, but the power symbol and green font is still a mystery to me. Anyways, here are the first two screenshots:

P.S. That "A next Meat Gear is ..." teaser page now reads "METAL GEAR SOLID TOUCH" in the window header. Just in case you wanted another confirmation.

The game, which is set for Spring 2009 according to the press release, will take place in what seems to be during Metal Gear Solid 4:
"Metal Gear Solid Touch focuses on action elements of Hideo Kojima’s classic stealth series, and will see series veteran Solid Snake embark on an all-new mission. Using locations and characters introduced in Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Solid Touch initially offers eight action-packed stages, with more to be added at a later date. The new title gives the player control via the Apple systems’ touch panel, and also allows users to pan in and out of the action. Replay value is also enhanced via bonuses such as wallpapers and images that are attained by completing key elements within the game."
From the screens alone I will say the game seems to boast some graphical prowess, but I'd have to see it in motion first. But, being an open MGS fanboy, chances are I'm buying this regardless... I'm just more or less curious as to exactly how canon this title will be, and how open it will be to those that haven't played through MGS4.
Also announced along side MGST are Silent Hill: The Escape, and Frogger; but those titles didn't have cryptic teaser sites now did they?

A Next Metal Gear Is...
Totally unfair! Just tell me Kojima! You've probably already heard this elsewhere, but I'm sorry, you'll have to hear it again. Kojima Productions has put up a mysterious URL, with an even more mysterious image:

Click to view the teaser page

Click to view the teaser page
What could this mean? Who knows. I'd like to assume this has something to do with that Metal Gear Solid Existence trademark a few months back. However the page's URL has "MGST" in it, and not "MGSE", though it may just stand for "Metal Gear Solid teaser" as that's essentially all it is at this point.
A lot of folks are speculating that this could be the 360 version of MSG4, what with the neon green, but I don't think Konami would make a fact like that so cryptic. A new MGS built for 360, however, seems more likely ... and would probably force me to get a 360. What do you think this all means?

Serious, EA went all out with that FIFA 09 and Need for Speed DLC. I feel bad for the people that get into these games, knowing a sequal is seemingly months away. Gonna try and get my free SackBoy costume, and that's about it. Also, I plan on getting the WALL-E Blu-ray, maybe I'll have a review, it all depends n my production scheduale.
Also, I suspected last week that the MGS4 weekly downloadable content was over. Looks like I spoke to soon, as it seems they just took a week off (presumably for that demo?). This weeks download is another song, "Escape Through the Woods" from Metal Gear Solid 3.

And this week's MGS4 download is ... nothing? Maybe all the free DLC is over now that the demo has released? I sure hope not, I've been enjoying all this free content. And it looks ike we'll never get a Integral Podcast, despite the catagory being there, what with Ryan Payton no longer at Kojima Productions.
Seriously, why is the MGS4 demo just releasing now? Anyways, the "week one" though more like "week three" LittleBigPlanet downloads are finally here so get them while you can this week. I also got me the PixelJunk Monsters theme. Oh, and while I may lack respect for Guitar Hero, I have to recommend that Oasis track pack, as those are three of the best songs off Dig Out Your Soul. And more seriously, where'd all the PSP content go? This is the 3rd week now...

TGS 08: More SackBoys please
Some pretty awesome news came out of Sony's press conference at this years Tokyo Game Show. Not only will your Sack characters be able to dress up as Killzone's Helghast soldiers, or the pre-order exclusive Kratos and Nariko but ... you'll also be able to dress as Old Snake and Sephiroth!

No word yet on how these two will be unlocked, I just hope I can easily get SackSnake.

Metal Gear Solid Existence

First off, we have the name. Existence. For those that don't know, Existence was already the name of the 3rd disc in Metal Gear Solid 3: Substance Limited Edition. That disc was actually a movie comprised of MGS3 cut-scenes, so chances are it's not that, because it technically isn't a game. It's also possible that this is the re-release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Especially considering the MGS2: Substance, MGS3: Subsistence pattern, but Existence doesn't really have that "Sub" thing going for it. Also note, the filed name lacks a number, so which leads me to believe it's connected to the PSone original, Metal Gear Solid. Also, you have to think, what major overhaul could they really have to show us, not even 5 months after the game's release? Despite that, it's still plausible; so here goes all of my predictions:
1. Name for MGS4 re-release
2. A re-release of MGS for Wii or DS, not Twin Snakes because Silicon Knights is now with Microsoft.
3. An HD remake of MGS for PSN or even possibly XBLA
4. A new PSP title following Big Boss; after Portable Ops
These are just my own predictions, being recorded now so that if any of these are right, you can list me as the Metal Gear Messiah ... or something like that.

Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty
Noticed that there's no 2? That's because I'm talking about the comic book series. That's the name of the comic adaptation of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, the game. The series was completed and the hardcover collection, The Complete Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty, just arrived at my home today. I had pre-ordered the book about a month ago from Amazon. I was practically sold when I saw the $34.65 price tag, with a list price of $55; and with Amazon Prime's free 2 day shipping, it was a deal ... a steal even.

Considering, it was supposed to arrive on July 31st, and then I was given a notification that it was delayed till August 5th, but it arrived today, so I'm not complaining. I'm pretty glad I got this now though, considering there is no announced release for the Metal Gear Solid 2: Digital Graphic Novel. Plus, I'm just a big fan of Ashley Wood, and I missed my chance at getting the hardcover edition of The Complete Metal Gear Solid, which is actually advertised on the back of the book despite not being available. I plan to read this as soon as I can, though I'd like to get through Watchmen first.
You can probably (no promises!) look forward to reviews of both Watchmen and The Complete Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty in the coming month or so.

MGS4 - 7/24/08 download hints...
Maybe I'm just thinking too much on this one, but today's Extras download reveals something. It's the "Harrier" music from Metal Gear Solid 2: Digital Graphic Novel, and it includes a logo as well... thing is the title was never announced for America, and so was only officially known as Metal Gear Solid 2: Bande Dessinée. Here's a clip from our new VFHvideo account over at YouTube:
Should be noted that the Metal Gear Solid 2: Bande Dessinée has already been released in Japan, on DVD, and not PSP's UMD as initially planned. We reported that a couple months ago.
P.S, check the actual YouTube link to watch this in high-res, here.
See, the logo is similar to the first Digital Grahic Novel, but with REX swapped out for Ray.

Metal Gear Solid 4 update - 7/10/08
It's Thursday, so that means there's more free cntent from the Metal Gear Solid 4 Extra's menu. This week's download is just one song.
"Battle of Highland" - Metal Gear Solid 4
Designed to accompany battles in South America. Different from the game's South American combat music, it posses a more ethnic tone.
And being this is the first time I'm covering the game's content like this; previous music tracks include "Hind D" - Metal Gear Solid, and "Conclusion" - Metal Gear Solid 4. I have covered however, last weeks content, which can be read at the end of this article.
I know it's still early, but I'm curious how much content they plan to give us, and for how long. We haven't even gotten one Integral Podcast to download yet.
