God of War III Review

God of War III has arrived on the PlayStation 3, to tie up lose ends for the third installment in the series. I never really got into the PlayStation’s business, but I got myself a PS3 Slim when they were first released and have heard good things of the GoW series, so before the release of GoW3, I picked up the GoW Collection and beat the first two games in the trilogy. I found them a bit boring and repetitive, but GoW3 came out during Spring Break and I was bored, so figured what the hey. Does the final game of the trilogy stick to the same old same old, or reinvent itself into a true spectacle? Read on, dear viewers, to find out.

As this is a true sequel to the previous games, the story picks up right after the second left off. You are on top of Gaia, a titan, scaling Mount Olympus on your way to kick Zeus’ ass with the rest of your ginormous friends. Kratos has a bone to pick with Zeus and the other gods, and he’s not gonna stop until they are all dead. I was completely blown away from the beginning, as the graphics and cinematics are simply stunning. This is by far one of the best looking games I’ve ever played. Everything pops, and it’s just incredible. The game starts with a bang as well. Not only are you climbing all over a friggin’ titan, but GoW3 wastes no time with giving you a challenge, in the form of the god Poseidon. He is your first boss encounter, and it happens within ten minutes of actually starting the game.

One of the things that bothered me from the previous GoW games, was that there weren’t really any boss battles. I have a bad memory, but I think there were like, two in the first game, and maybe a handful more in the second. You are just stuck in a giant temple the entire time, and don’t face many bosses. God of War III remedies that quite a bit, by taking you from location to location, and pitting you up against five gods, and another two or three bosses and epic enemies. These fights are pretty amazing, and brutal. Some of the things Kratos does…..damn. You do visit the same locations a couple times, and do that damned flying through a tunnel a bit, but overall, the variety is good and you’ll keep playing until you reach the end.

The gameplay itself is almost identical to previous iterations. You run through environments, solving little puzzles here and there, cutting up enemies as you go. Your main weapon is still the Blades of Chaos, I mean, the Blades of Athena, no, wait, that’s not right, they are the Blades of Exile, yeah, that’s it. The game hasn’t changed too much, so yeah, you’re still wielding those dual blades chained to your arms, although there is an extra move or two. The main addition is that of the combat grapple, where you can be guarding and press Circle to grab an enemy, and then do a sweet move with him, like pressing Square to use him as a meat-shield and run other enemies over, which is pretty awesome. Other than that, your light attack is still Square, heavy attack is Triangle, and you jump with X. You can hold L1 to block, and then press a face button to do a special move.

Quick-time events are also back, naturally, as they were a major feature of the first games. They’ve slightly been enhanced, with the button to press on the side of the screen that matches with the controller. This definitely threw me off the first time I saw it, as I didn’t know where the friggin’ icon was, as it moved around the screen basically, but once you figure it out, it’s easy, and an extra queue to let you know which button to press. However, it makes enjoying the cinematic moments a lot harder, as you want to be able to look directly at the action, but you can’t if you have a wide screen TV. You instead have to be looking out of your peripherals the entire time and looking at all sides of your screen install of a central location.

There are multiple weapons you can pick up in the game, as well as the ability to use magic and items. There are a total of four main weapons, and while each behaves slightly different, they are essentially the same, aside from perhaps the gauntlets. Each are dual-blades, so no single swords or anything this time around. Each definitely has different attacks which do different things to enemies and will have Kratos moving slightly differently, but overall, same thing. Each weapon also has a unique magic, so if you want to use a particular magic, you have to have that weapon equipped, although changing weapons is as simple as a tap of the d-pad. The magics more so determined which weapon I wanted to have out, although like the weapons, they are also fairly similar, so using any magic when there are numerous enemies on screen will have the relatively same effect. The coolest magic, aside from the awesome tornado you lose after the prologue, is the Army of Sparta, where you surround yourself with Spartan shields, in a phalanx, and kill everyone in your radius.

Aside from the weapons’ and their magic, you can also wield a few items, such as a bow, an annoying head, and another ability or two. These are activated by holding the L2 button and pressing a face button. You have to use the head a lot, if you want those blasted treasure chests, and the others I only used when necessary, so they don’t add too much to the game.

Those treasure chests are the same as those in the previous games as well, except there is a third item you can get from them this time around, the minotaur horn, along with the usual gorgon eye and phoenix feather. While there are three collectibles, you only need to find three of each to upgrade each unit, with the third being for use with the aforementioned items. Unfortunately, most of these chests are hidden from view, so you’ll have to use a certain someone’s head to uncover them, which means you’ll be pulling out the head every where you go in search of these chests, if you so choose, and every time you pull it out, it belts out an annoying scream.

Aside from those valuables, there are also godly items scattered throughout the world, which you’ll most definitely want to seek out. These don’t do anything until after you’ve beaten the game, but once you’ve done that, they act as cheats, which you can turn on and off, such as infinite magic, decreased damage, health meter slowly drains, and other such effects, which can be fun to play around with.

Once you’ve beaten the game, you also unlock a harder difficulty, for a total of four, as well as a costume for Kratos, which is pretty awesome looking and has an effect or two. Unfortunately, that is the only real extra costume in the game, which is disappointing. There were others, but you had to get those through pre-orders, slurpee drinking, and what not. And of course, GoW3 takes from the previous games again with other extras it offers, including extensive making-of videos, which are definitely worth a watch, and a handful of challenges and an arena. The challenges are sort of fun, but nothing that will add hours of gameplay.

I beat the game on my first play through on normal, in a little over 8 hours. So, if you’re playing on easy or normal, I wouldn’t expect it to take you too much longer than that; around the 10 hour range; hard may take longer. So, while the game isn’t the longest in the world, it gets the job done. In fact, I felt it dragged itself along at times, but that’s mainly due to the story construction and how it’s a little weird at times if you really think about it. Either way, the game is packed with plenty of variety, with more than a few crazy awesome moments that keep the game fresh. There are a handful of truly epic moments and some super brutality. The power of the PS3 does allow for some incredible experiences and you’ll definitely be playing more and more in hopes of getting to another one.

Kratos sticks with his character, in being a complete bad-ass and brutal mother f’er and there are some times where you just laugh, or maybe get sick, at the things he does. Definitely not a game for kids. Along with this, I found GoW3 to be a bit more focused on the combat and fighting, as opposed to the puzzle solving, which was a bit more laid back this time around. While the games have never been super puzzle heavy, the ones they did include weren’t exactly trivial. There are some puzzling moments in the game, but not quite as many as there have been in the past.

Overall, God of War III definitely repeats what it’s done in the past, but brings with it amazing graphics and some spectacular moments. If you’ve played the first two games, don’t expect anything really new, in terms of gameplay, which remains a bit of a hack-and-slash. However, if you’re already invested in the story, then you’ll definitely want to see its conclusion, and experience the shear awesomeness that is GoW3. Don’t be scared off either, if you haven’t played the first two games. Their stories aren’t incredibly important, and GoW3 can most definitely be enjoyed without playing the others. Kratos’ story is replayed a few times during GoW3, so you can play catch up, although you may be a bit lost at times, but it’s nothing you can’t google. If you didn’t like the previous games, you won’t like this one, but if you thought they were decent enough, you may want to just rent this bad boy to check out the graphics; they’re pretty awesome.

Spider-Man gets Rebooted

It's the comic movies of the night! Sony Pictures has announced that the 2011 slated Spider-Man 4 film is no more, and the studio with start from Peter Parker's high-school days with a new cast, film crew, and release date set for 2012.

That's right, after two fantastic films and one not so great, Sam Raimi, Toby Maguire and the rest of the cast and crew that made the Spider-Man film franchise so memorable will not be returning when the web-slinger comes back to theaters next time. There's no work on the new cast/crew for this Spider-Man reboot, but Sony and Marvel seem pretty set on that 2012 release.

Personally, I'm a bit upset. I liked the Spider-Man films... except for the third; but regardless I was really looking forward to what Sam Raimi had in mind for the next film, if anything I was just looking for proper closure because I didn't get it from the third film. Plus I liked Raimi's filming style, I thought Toby Macguire was a believable Peter Parker, and Bruce Campbell was just awesome as usual.

But what bothers me the most about the reboot is that it hasn't even been ten years since the first Spider-Man released, isn't a reboot a little soon? I mean, I can understand why Marvel chose to reboot film franchises like The Punisher and Hulk (and DC with Batman) so soon after their first releases because those films just weren't that great to carry on. But Spider-Man 1 and 2 were some of the greatest comic adaptations of all time. Maybe Marvel should try making some new film franchises that are good (Iron Man is close, X-Men... not so much), instead of just rebooting already done characters. It's quality, not quantity that counts, I don't care what that check from Disney tells you.

PlayStation 3 Slim Finally Announced

That's right, today at Gamescom, Sony announced the PlayStation 3 Slim.

Not only is the device 33% lighter than the original, but it's also cheaper, at $299, and comes with a 120GB hard drive. And all of those 80GB PS3s still on store shelves also get the price drop at $299, until they run out.

Oh, and guess what. The Slim is coming out pretty soon. Not next year, not for the holidays, no. It is coming out the first week of September. Yeah, that's less than a month away.

If I was Nintendo or Microsoft, I'd start getting worried.

E3 09: Sony Media

As with the Nintendo media yesterday, here's some select video's from Sony's E3 catalog.

I only decided to upload a select batch of videos that I felt needed your viewership, as a few of Sony's "E3" assets were actually old, i.e. their E3 God of War III trailer, is actually the one we posted back in February. And as of posting this, a direct version of the beautifully awesome The Last Guardian trailer is not available from Sony, but when I get a hold of, you know that will show up here right away!

PS3: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Heavy Rain trailers

PSP: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, echochrono (working title), and PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe trailers

If you have any media requests (i.e. Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft), please leave a comment and I'll see what I can find for you!

The show ended there.

Honestly, wow. I mean, the show was so-so at the start, and $250 for the PSP Go is a real kicker. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker has me pretty pumped, though I was surprised that despite Kojima being there, there was no mention of Metal Gear Solid: Rising on PS3. Was really surprised to hear about Final Fantasy XIV already, but when it turned out to be a new online title I lost interest.

As for the Sony's attemp at motion, it seems like a cross between Nintendo's Wii MotionPlus and Microsoft's "Natal"; but like Natal it's still in an early phase and doesn't seem to be intended for release anytime soon. ModNation Racers looks surprisingly cool, and lastly, The Last Guardian had already won me over with the leaked trailer, this finalized version just makes it so much sweeter.

I think Microsoft won the show for me in terms of technology, but I think Sony really won in terms of game content... as for Nintendo, hey, they did better than last year at least.

Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic review

Sony tries to revive the cult favorite, Rag Doll Kung Fu, game for a new market, as a Playstation Network title for Playstation 3. Whether you payed for the game when it released, or got it while it was free, was the download worth it? Let's take a look!

Story
While fighting games are never really known for their storylines, it should be noted that Rag Doll Kung Fu doesn't even have one to begin with. You have your five, generic, and forgetable rag doll characters, and they fight; there's not much more to it. To me, that aspect of having no connection to the characters in terms of who they are, or their world makes the game very uninteresting.

Gameplay
Based on looks alone, Fists of Fury reminds me a lot of Super Smash Bros., especially in terms of map layout and on screen display, but the similarities end there. There is no single player modes to the game other than the "Challenges" mode, which are more of a tutorial than anything else. Otherwise you can play the four different multiplayer modes with bots. Such modes include Deathmatch, in which you set lives and whoever's health runs out first ... you get the idea. There's also a "capture the flag" like mode in which you must place a fish in a basket, and there's King of the Hill as well.

The controls are pretty simple too, with all actions controls via the face button and left analog stick, with occasional weapns controlled via the right stick. There's even some Sixaxis controls as well; they fell unnecessary at times, but when they work, the effects are pretty neat. And along with the game being simple control-wise, it's also extremely empty. Besides the multiplayer game, and "challenges", ... that's it. There isn't even an online competitive mode, which you think would be a standard feature fora fighting game this generation, especially in a PSN title from Sony themselves. There's also Trophy support, but chances are you'll only get a few before you stop caring about the game.

Graphics
This to me was really the only place where Rag Doll Kung Fu really stood out. The characters and environments are rendered out very nicely and the bloom lighting and shine effects on the characters really give off the effect of little toys fighting each other. However, there are only five or so characters in the game, and the "custom character" option only lets you mix and match parts of said characters, so while the graphics may look nice, you're also stuck seeing the same parts and animations, and that's never fun.

Sound
This aspect I can see as the most argued, because music is a little more subjective than graphics and gameplay. If you dig the hip-hop sound mixed with traditional Asian instruments and vocals, it's pretty enjoyable for what it's worth. But if hip-hop or Asian style music isn't your thing, you may want to low the volume. Character wise, there aren't sounds to tell the already generic characters apart, so in the end, playing the game on mute may not make a difference in the experience.

Final Thoughts
I'm interested to know why Sony decided they needed to make a new version of Rag Doll Kung Fu ... and completely ignore all the features of their system. That really is the most disappointing aspect of this game, is the fact that not only is the gameplay and character selection bland, but there isn't even any online interaction, which is inexcusable for a first-party title, and a fighting one at that, nearly three years into the system's life. Hopefully that issue can be patched at a later date, but I'm glad this was available for free when I got it, because if I payed for this I would be even further dissapointed.

Overall Score: 5.5/10

Sony planning God of War I & II Blu-ray?

Got this screenshot from a survey sent out by Sony regarding a God of War III Collector's Edition. Fourth option down looked very intriguing to say the least:

Considering most PS3s nowadays do not have Playstation 2 backwards compatibility, would you be willing to pay more for a God of War III Collector's Edition if it came with the first two games on one Blu-ray? If not, what else from that list would you be willing to pay for?

Who says PSP gets no love?

Sure, we may not have the most PSP content here (blame no one having it, yet), but you also can't excuse the lack of attention it gets. From UMD hatred, few releases, and even weeks go by where Sony adds no PSP content to the Playstation Store. But apparently those days are over, because Sony is announcing PSP content like it's a system launch.

From SCEA's annual Destination Playstation conference it was announced that:

- There will be 2 new PSP bundles; Assassin's Creed bundle (Includes a Black PSP, new Assassin's Creed title, with more features TBA) and a Hanna Montana bundle (Includes a new Lilac PSP, Hannah Montana game, Hannah Montana TV series UMD, a 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo, and decals for the PSP) ... why?

- New PSP titles including LittlleBigPlanet, MotorStorm: Arctic Edge (also on PS2, as to why, I don't know), and ... Petz (No thanks, Ubisoft); as well as Rock Band Unplugged, which will include its own store, and there's a bunch of EA Sports titles (but who cares?).

- Also the Warhawk Command Center will be launching on Playstation Home this week

Full press release at Playstation.Blog

Update: Thanks to an Atlus newsletter, I can also now say that Shin Megami Tensai: Persona will be coming to the PSP as well, releasing Fall 09 in North America

Goodbye, Sony DSC-T1

PPG_05
PPG_05,
originally uploaded by VFH.
There it is, the last photo taken on my Sony DSC-T1 digital camera. For those unaware, the DSC-T1 was Sony's first ultra-thin compact camera, a.k.a. Cybershot, released in 2004. I got it back when it first released, so it's lasted decently long for new technology. Basically what happened is the charge-coupled device (CCD) died. The CCD is what enables the camera to see, so without that, there's no photo, just a black screen. In recent weeks I had been getting odd scan lines on my screen, but then today it went black. I can see the menus and previous photos fine however, so I know it's not the screen's fault.

Well, at least it lasted me four years, right? Technology...

Note, this is my first post directly from Flickr. Just trying out the feature.

Playstation.com gets a facelift

Sony has given Playstation.com a face lift, and brought the Playstation Network with it, letting go of the long running Playstation Underground program. Other than the new sleeker interface, the site has some new features to boast about.

Much like Xbox.com's ability to track what your Live friends are doing even when you're not at your system, you can now track what you PSN friends are playing, all from the comfort of your computer. Also added, like Microsoft recently designed for its Live Marketplace, is the ability to browse the Playstation Store from the web. But unlike Microsoft, you can't add the downloads from the computer to your console, you can just see what's available. There's lots more to list ... but yeah, just see for yourself, it's more interesting that way.

And no worries, Playstation Underground members, the forums are still available. With adjustments of course; gone are the Lithium genericons, now you have a nice sized version of your PSN image. And that's about all I noticed. I'm a fan of the new uniformed system. Click here to view the new(but old) boards.

Racist Sony Commercial

Ok, I know, enough with the YouTube today! Sorry but this had to be posted, I found this mistakenly while looking for Bill Cosby impressions on YouTube, yeah I spend my time quite well...

I really wish that was Sony's catchphrase. Imaginge starting up your Playstation 3 only to see "Sony: Because Caucasians Are Just Too Damn Tall." I would be priceless...

Now in HD

So, I've finally completed my entry into the 21st century by getting an HD TV today. A 26" Sony Bravia, it's quite nice, and with its glossy black trim it matches well with my PS3. Anyways, after setting up, I hooked up my Wii and PS3 to the TV, though currently both are connected with standard composite cables. So I'm not getting a real HD experience quite yet, but it's nice to finally get to play my games in the 16:9 ratio they were meant for. I plan to get an HDMI cable for the PS3 and component cables for the Wii as soon as I can. I'll tell how good it is later.

Thank you SCEA

I have just now received my pass to Sony Computer Entertainment of America's press/media site thanks to the help of their Corporate Communications Specialist, Abigail Murphy. Though we already have contact with Sony's European branch, it is a welcome privilege to have contact with a Sony branch that's close to home. This is sure to greatly aid our future news, previews, and reviews for all 4 of Sony's platforms (PS3, PSN, PSP and PS2).

Thank you SCEE

Well, it's official, View From Heaven is going places. I just received my e-mail from Nick Caplin of Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe, granting access to their Press and Media site. This is the first press access we've obtained, and should not be the last. With this you can expect to see more Playstation related content in the coming months. I thank Mr. Caplin and the rest of SCEE for their speedy reply and generosity.
