Grill Off with Ultra Hand! Review

This and the next Club Nintendo review should have been posted over a month ago when they were first released, but alas, real life hit and I had other priorities. So here is the first of what's to be many reviews this month. Grill Off with Ultra Hand! is the first of hopefully many Club Nintendo exclusive WiiWare titles, and goes for just 80 Coins, the cheapest reward available from the North American program as of now. But it's not the truly first WiiWare title available from the service, as the real first, Doc Louis's Punch-Out!!, was available for Platinum members last year.

Background
Grill Off with Ultra Hand! is a WiiWare game featuring one of Nintendo's earliest creations, the Ultra Hand, an extending toy that allowed you to grab objects from a distance. It has since appeared in numerous games, mainly in the WarioWare titles, but this marks its first starring appearance since the toy's original release.

Gameplay
There really isn't that much to this game, and for 80 Coins, I guess I'm not supposed to expect much. There are two modes, Single Player and Vs. Play, but each basically play the same. You use the Wiimote and nunchuck just as you would hold the actual Ultra Hand toy, twisting them at the same time in a hedge-clipper like motion. Doing this makes the on-screen Ultra Hand grab a piece of meat, place it on the barbeque, and then grab it again to put on a plate. The single player is an endless mode of this, competing on a leaderboard for the highest score, where as the versus mode (only two players) has both players competing for the best score in a 90 second time limit. And overall, the experience isn't very enjoyable or long lasting. If you'd like to see it yourself before dropping 80 Coins on this, check the game's official website.

Final Thoughts
Unlike Doc Louis's Punch-Out!!, there's nothing overly exclusive about Grill Off with Ultra Hand!. Exclusive as in, it's not a case where you have only 30 days to claim your prize and that's the only chance you'll ever get to actually get the game, where there would be a feeling of exclusivity when you take the chance of redeeming the game. Sure, it's exclusive to Club Nintendo, but you can get it whenever, and even read/watch reviews before saying, "I actually want to waste my 80 Coins". In my case, I just had an ever-growing amount of coins and nothing worthwhile to spend them on, so 80 didn't seem like much of a risk; too bad I'll never touch this game again.

Overall Score: 3/10

Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! review

Following the Game & Watch Collection, Nintendo releases another exclusive game through its North American Club Nintendo program, however unlike the aforementioned game this downloadable title can't be earned via the programs Coins; instead was available exclusively to 2009 Platinum status club members... like myself.

Now, because you can't actually get this title unless you have say a friend who earned Platinum status, got this instead of the Mario hat, and then doesn't want the game... but we're not talking technicalities here. Instead, I'm just going to give an overview of the game, in the absence of a proper video feature.

Gamplay
If you've played Next Level Games' actual Punch-Out!! game for Wii, then this Doc Louis version isn't going to feel any different. In fact, the only control difference between the two games is the absence of Balance Board support (but I don't have a board so, quite frankly, I'm not missing the feature). But, peripheral support isn't the only thing missing... think of Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! as a Punch-Out!! demo, with a new opposing character, and could only be appreciated by Punch-Out!! fans.

The game offers three modes of play, all single-player, and more or less the same. The first is Warm-Up, which is slow paced and meant to make you familiar with Doc Louis's move-set and visual cues. It will go by quick, but that's a good thing for one reason... which I'll get to later.

The next mode is Training, which is a standard three-round boxing match against Doc, not unlike the matches you'll encounter in the actual Punch-Out!! game for Wii. In terms of difficulty, Doc's an average character, if you time your moves right with his visual cues than it's a simple match, but if you're not quick to react you may find yourself in Training for awhile.

The last mode, Sparring, is unlocked by completing both Warm Up and Training. And before I get to that, here's why I'm glad Warm-Up is easy and short, because despite the channel-file itself being 143 blocks of Wii memory, Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! itself doesn't have an actual save file. So yes, that means every time you want to start Sparring, you have to beat the other two modes first, which is kind of annoying. Essentially what Sparring is, is another standard three-round fight, but this time Doc Louis can use Star Punch, which instantly KOs you. It's difficult but, those looking for a tough Punch-Out!! battle should be pleased.

Overall Thoughts
Other than the three game modes, there really isn't anything else to this game. If you enjoyed Punch-Out!! but after all this time you felt like punching a new fighter in the face, then this should've been the reward for you. And who wouldn't want a game where you punch Doc Louis's chocolate bar out of his hands, and he still says, "Thanks for joining Club Nintendo, Mac."

Overall Score: 6.5/10

No More Weekly Store Updates

Hello readers, the Fall/Winter season comes upon us, things tend to get busy around here. And, as you may have seen, starting with last night's This Week in Fringe, we're going to have a bigger focus on weekly features and exclusive reviews instead of just reporting news/updates.

For me, one of the biggest pains every week was posting the Nintendo Download, PlayStation Store, and Xbox Live Marketplace weekly updates. Why? Because even though a bulk of it is just copy/paste from the shop update releases themselves, there's a lot of reformatting I need to do for something that most readers can easily just find elsewhere. The XBLM update specifically was most troublesome because it's a case where I have to check daily, and actually search to see what's new each day.

So, starting this week, we will no longer be posting the updates for digital stores. Sorry if this bothers you, but hopefully the increase in original content will be appreciated.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Dark Lord Review

Where to start... Where to start... I suppose I will start off by simply telling JDW Happy Birthday! And although this review is a bit late, better late than never... right??

For those of you who have played My Life as a King and simply assume that My Life as a Dark Lord is the same thing from a different perspective, you could not be more wrong. My Life as a Dark Lord is the newest installment in the Square Enix tower defense games.

Gameplay
Now when I say "Tower Defense" you will more than likely think of Final Fantasy: Crystal Defenders, which involves little guys running along a path, attempting to make it to the end. While this is usually the case, I assure you My Life as a Dark Lord is nothing of the same. Instead, I like to think of it as if the enemies have already made it past the path on Crystal Defenders and are now trying to overtake the tower itself. When a stage begins, you have a small tower with no floors whatsoever. Your job is to prevent the enemies (or in this case, the heroes) from reaching the top. In order to do so you must build floors, and, obviously, the more floors you build, the harder it is for the enemies to reach the top.

Throughout the game you will gain various monsters that you can place on floors to stop the enemies. There are five types of monsters that can be obtained. "Melee" monsters are the strongest of the monsters, but will cost slightly more. They are strong against Ranged enemies, and weak against Magic enemies. Next up, "Ranged" monsters are slightly weaker, but can eventually use certain attributes such as poison, and... well... just poison, they also tend to have more HP than Melee monsters. Ranged monsters are stronger against Magic enemies monsters, but weak against Melee type enemies. Third type is are the "Magic" monsters. They do pretty portions of damage, but have the least amount of HP. They eventually learn the "Block" ability, which allows them to dive in front of a bullet. They are strong against Melee type enemies, but weak against Ranged.

Moving on, the next monster is the "Healing" monster. It will not attack the enemy, but instead will heal its teammates that are on the same floor. There is not specific weakness for the Healing type, but they tend to have low amounts of HP. Finally we have the "Neutral" type. As you can easily guess, the Neutral type is neither strong, nor weak against anything. They will, like the Magic type, learn the "Block" ability. I bet you think I'm done, but oh no, I am not! There are also various types of floors that you will unlock along the way. But, for your sake, and mine, I will spare you the long rant and squish it down into the canned version.

The floors work in the same basic way as the monsters. You have your Attack floors, which will attack your enemy with either melee or magic. Your defense floor, which will simply find ways to help protect your monsters. And last, you have your support floors. These floors have been found to put a buff on your monsters (such as raising their defense, or making the faster (AKA: haste)), or inflict a curse of sorts (such as slow and poison) on the enemies. To put it quite simply, it is like playing a game of rock-paper-scissors; Melee beats Ranged, Ranged beats Magic, Magic beats Melee. Of course, as you can tell, there is a bit more strategy to it than that.

Story
It's quite basic really, there once was a Dark Lord in which all the monsters loved, but one day an adventurer managed to climb his tower. In order to save his beloved monster friends, he sacrificed himself, and is now trapped inside a crystal. But oh no! Now there is no Dark Lord! What ever will the poor monsters do?! Not to worry! The daughter of the Dark Lord is here to take the throne from her father (in whom she hates) and be the most feared Dark Lord in the world! The monster rejoice! Hurray!

Graphics
Well, seeing as it's a tower defense game, a WiiWare one at that, there really isn't much to the graphics that will improve the overall experience. I would say that they are mediocre, but most certainly not something to detract you from playing the game.

Sound
Quite pleasant actually. For being a Dark Lord, the music sure is happy as hell! The music is nothing spectacular, just catchy little tunes while your killing the do-gooders.

Overall
I would have to say that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Dark Lord is well worth the 1,000 Wii points ($10). It has quite a lengthy campaign that will last you for days, and it actually gets very challenging towards the end. I often found myself playing stages over and over, AND OVER again. It will usually take a time or two just to figure out the general strategy you will have to use against the enemy. I would also like to point out that in the beginning the game is quite simplistic and bland, but stick with it and the game will end up surprising you (I know it did me), and it is well worth the 10 bucks. If you own a Wii, and tend to enjoy tower defense games, definitely give this one a try.

Overall Score: 8.5/10

Nintendo DSiWare
Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters - 800 Nintendo DSi Points (Nintendo, Players: 1, E)

Yes, you read that right, Super Star Wars. In fact, according to a Nintendo press release, this is the first in a month of Star Wars promotions on the Wii [reasoning unknown]. Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi will both arrive later this month on the VC; and a surprise twist, the Check Mii Out and Everybody Votes channels will also feature Star Wars themed polls and contests. The press release ends with "Additional classic LucasArts games for Virtual Console will be announced in the future." so hopefully that means we can look forward to some non-Star Wars titles in the realm of ... I don't know... Monkey Island? But i doubt it.
