Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Dark Lord Review

Where to start... Where to start... I suppose I will start off by simply telling JDW Happy Birthday! And although this review is a bit late, better late than never... right??

For those of you who have played My Life as a King and simply assume that My Life as a Dark Lord is the same thing from a different perspective, you could not be more wrong. My Life as a Dark Lord is the newest installment in the Square Enix tower defense games.

Gameplay
Now when I say "Tower Defense" you will more than likely think of Final Fantasy: Crystal Defenders, which involves little guys running along a path, attempting to make it to the end. While this is usually the case, I assure you My Life as a Dark Lord is nothing of the same. Instead, I like to think of it as if the enemies have already made it past the path on Crystal Defenders and are now trying to overtake the tower itself. When a stage begins, you have a small tower with no floors whatsoever. Your job is to prevent the enemies (or in this case, the heroes) from reaching the top. In order to do so you must build floors, and, obviously, the more floors you build, the harder it is for the enemies to reach the top.

Throughout the game you will gain various monsters that you can place on floors to stop the enemies. There are five types of monsters that can be obtained. "Melee" monsters are the strongest of the monsters, but will cost slightly more. They are strong against Ranged enemies, and weak against Magic enemies. Next up, "Ranged" monsters are slightly weaker, but can eventually use certain attributes such as poison, and... well... just poison, they also tend to have more HP than Melee monsters. Ranged monsters are stronger against Magic enemies monsters, but weak against Melee type enemies. Third type is are the "Magic" monsters. They do pretty portions of damage, but have the least amount of HP. They eventually learn the "Block" ability, which allows them to dive in front of a bullet. They are strong against Melee type enemies, but weak against Ranged.

Moving on, the next monster is the "Healing" monster. It will not attack the enemy, but instead will heal its teammates that are on the same floor. There is not specific weakness for the Healing type, but they tend to have low amounts of HP. Finally we have the "Neutral" type. As you can easily guess, the Neutral type is neither strong, nor weak against anything. They will, like the Magic type, learn the "Block" ability. I bet you think I'm done, but oh no, I am not! There are also various types of floors that you will unlock along the way. But, for your sake, and mine, I will spare you the long rant and squish it down into the canned version.

The floors work in the same basic way as the monsters. You have your Attack floors, which will attack your enemy with either melee or magic. Your defense floor, which will simply find ways to help protect your monsters. And last, you have your support floors. These floors have been found to put a buff on your monsters (such as raising their defense, or making the faster (AKA: haste)), or inflict a curse of sorts (such as slow and poison) on the enemies. To put it quite simply, it is like playing a game of rock-paper-scissors; Melee beats Ranged, Ranged beats Magic, Magic beats Melee. Of course, as you can tell, there is a bit more strategy to it than that.

Story
It's quite basic really, there once was a Dark Lord in which all the monsters loved, but one day an adventurer managed to climb his tower. In order to save his beloved monster friends, he sacrificed himself, and is now trapped inside a crystal. But oh no! Now there is no Dark Lord! What ever will the poor monsters do?! Not to worry! The daughter of the Dark Lord is here to take the throne from her father (in whom she hates) and be the most feared Dark Lord in the world! The monster rejoice! Hurray!

Graphics
Well, seeing as it's a tower defense game, a WiiWare one at that, there really isn't much to the graphics that will improve the overall experience. I would say that they are mediocre, but most certainly not something to detract you from playing the game.

Sound
Quite pleasant actually. For being a Dark Lord, the music sure is happy as hell! The music is nothing spectacular, just catchy little tunes while your killing the do-gooders.

Overall
I would have to say that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Dark Lord is well worth the 1,000 Wii points ($10). It has quite a lengthy campaign that will last you for days, and it actually gets very challenging towards the end. I often found myself playing stages over and over, AND OVER again. It will usually take a time or two just to figure out the general strategy you will have to use against the enemy. I would also like to point out that in the beginning the game is quite simplistic and bland, but stick with it and the game will end up surprising you (I know it did me), and it is well worth the 10 bucks. If you own a Wii, and tend to enjoy tower defense games, definitely give this one a try.

Overall Score: 8.5/10

Chrono Trigger DS coming 11/25/08

There it is, your North American release date for Chrono Trigger DS; November 25, 2008. That's one month before your little Christmas, those who celebrate it. It's probably the most anticipated RPG for this winter, at least on DS, which doesn't even have a huge RPG market.

I'm just awaiting the sales data to see if we get a real Chrono sequal, then maybe, just maybe, you'll get me interested.

Chrono Trigger DS Enlish trailer

The Chrono Trigger DS site for the North America is up. Pretty much the same as the Japanese one, but in case you'd missed it, here it is.

Wonder what new additions will be added to this version of the game?

Chrono Trigger DS!!!

Chrono Trigger DS is pretty much announced. Yeah, I know, take your time, whipe away those tears of joy. Their is a countdown clock, on a page that has ctds in the address, put up on the Square-Enix website. If that isn't reassuring I don't know what is. This just coincides with my post a few days ago. Does this mark a revival for the series? Maybe if this sells well we can expect a full sequel on the home consoles! That would just be so amazing, I'm excited. Possibly a surprise is awaiting us at E3? Maybe... a Chrono Cross remake next?! No, I shouldn't get my hopes up... but who knows?

Let the countdown begin!

Chrono Sequel

Lately I have been going through my old games, trying to beat a lot of the big ones I just never got around to finishing. Among titles like Okami, Final Fantasy 8, Twilight Princess, and Dragon quest 8, are the two Chrono games, Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger. While I haven't beaten either of them, I've played Chrono Cross enough as to where I can say that Chrono Cross is one of my top 5 favorite games of all time, easily. I have not made it more than two hours into Chrono trigger yet, so I cannot say the same for it, but it too is shaping up to be quite an amazing experience.

Now this brings me to the point of this post. Why have we not seen a next-gen sequel to these games? I know Square loves money, and the gamers love the series (Chrono Cross: 9.7 at IGN, Editors choice award. Chrono Trigger: Given countless high scores, also included in both IGNs' top 10 Snes games and top 100 games of all time. Places # 2 and 18 respectively.) If anything these games are legendary. Amazing atmosphere, one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard in a game, hands down, and interesting storys to boot.
If you haven't played these games, I strongly suggest you do. I have played hundreds, maybe even thousands of games in my lifetime, and very few stand out as much as Chrono Cross does. If you have played these games though, I know you are agreeing with me right now, so lets make our voices heard. Start a petition, tell your friends, post on your blog, email square. They need to know their is demand. We dont want a 6th installment in the Final Fantasy XIII miniseries, or whatever the hell they want to call it, we want a third Chrono game. So get to it! Support the cause, fight the good fight, let your voice be heard. Every person counts.

Square Enix aiming for Xbox success

At least that's what it looks like, with new media today for The Last Remnant, as ell as the first looks at Star Ocean: The Last Hope, and Infinite Undiscovery. The latter two are Xbox 360 exclusive; The Last Remnant is releasing on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

The Last Remnant, most notable for being Square's first project using Unreal Engine 3, is an RPG that will be released on both PS3 and 360. It will be simultaneously released in North America and Japan later this year.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope is the fourth main Star Ocean title, and an exclusive for the Xbox 360. The previous Star Ocean titles appeared on Super Famicom, Playstation, GameBoy Color, and Playstation 2; which makes the Xbox exclusivity a bit odd in my opinion.

The last (get it?) new title shown off by Square Enix is a completely new franchise being developed by tri-Ace (the same developers behind Star Ocean). Infinite Undiscovery is also an RPG.

From the looks of it Microsoft really wants to start selling Xbox 36o's in the Eastern market, and Square Enix is more than willing to help. Perhaps the reason behind these being Xbox 360 exclusive is the fact that Sony is getting the entire Final Fantasy XIII catalog. Also note, Square has yet to release any title on the Playstation 3...

One new DS demo

You heard right, there is but one new DS demo at the Nintendo Channel this week. And it is Square-Enix/Taito's Arkanoid DS, which actually should prove fun.

In addition to this lone new title are all of last weeks demos including:

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Worms: Open Warfare 2
High School Musical: Makin' the Cut
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
plus the 4 mainstay Nintendo demos (Brain Age 1 and 2, Flash Focus, and CrossworDS)

Also, please note that the Cake Mania 2 demo is removed, with Arkanoid DS taking its place; as to why is anyones guess.

The World Ends With You Review

TWEWY Review at, of course, the original VFH.
--------------------
UPDATE (3/22/10) VFH Classic is dead

The World Ends With You is a good game for the DS’s library at a time when it is a bit lacking of decent titles. It is an action RPG with a lot of depth and things going on, which can be a bit overwhelming at first, but you get used to all the craziness after a brief time, and can choose to ignore some of the deeper elements if you want to.
