Street Fighter IV Review

Let me just start off by saying that I started playing Street Fighter II in the arcade with Ryu slowly taking names after many dollars worth being eaten by the machine. That is to say that I play in an old school style with more focus on fighting than saving up some super meter to unleash some attack.

Street Fighter IV is an update that has been in long need after all those "SUPER ALPHA ULTRA MIX" tag along names they had going. I have the game on the PS3, but I can't imagine it is that much different on the 360. I have yet to play it in the arcade for lack of time, but I want to.

Graphics
Most of you readers must know that the game is a pseudo 3D-2D mix. The game plays like the old classic games, but is rendered in 3D. So, no more sprites to copy into gifs and use for your rather abnormal creative mixes. What this means is that when you win, or unleash certain attacks, the camera can rotate easily to give better views of the faces or action without need for thousands of hand-drawn sprites. The camera movement is fluid, so don't worry about it disrupting play; it is always reset to the default side position by the time you get control again. There is only one attack that really is annoying to watch, and that is Seth's spin-washing machine thing of death. The camera angle, I think, is a little overkill and shouldn't be so long.

Back on topic now, the graphics are pretty good. The faces the characters make are funny at times, with eyes popping and fear. My favorites are Blanka and Chun-Li, they both make laughable expressions when on the receiving end of revenge attacks. For those who don't want to play because of the 3D graphics, don't let them bother you. If you hate 2D fighters because you can't dodge on the 3rd plane, don't play it. (Well give it a shot, its a good game.)

Mechanics
Street Fighter is most known, I think, for the mechanics. Being able to juggle or not is and still a big deal for fighters these days. Take Tekken or Super Smash Bros., you can juggle pretty easy or pick people up off the ground. It alters the play doesn't it? SFIV stays true to its old mechanics of juggling, but they have allowed it in some cases, mainly reserved for Ultra/Super attacks. Because of the push back on hits it makes it harder to stay close when landing attacks, but it is possible. I've found that crossovers are a little easier to pull in this game than others, maybe its just me though. I've also come across that playing the computer can be disheartening when attempting to pull off Revenge meter moves since the computer can unleash there's during yours. (Which by human means is impossible. By 'during' I mean that they have already been hit by the first attack.)

Speaking of all these different attacks, I should clarify them since they are different.
  • Normal attacks - normal, hit just X or just L1. etc
  • Unique attacks - an attack unique to the character that does something extra, but not super. (Such as Ryu's forward+med punch)
  • Special attacks - SHORYUKEN, enough said.
  • Super attacks - At the bottom of your screen there are 4 blue bars, you can unleash charged special attacks with each bar, they fill from getting attacked, attacking, and missing attacks. Such as pushing two punches together when doing a hadoken will unleash a larger one. When all 4 are full you can unleash an ever larger super attack.
  • Ultra attack - This is new to SFIV, well maybe kinda in SFIII, but III sucked so we ignore this. The revenge bar is more of a circle attached to your special bar at the bottom. This fills by getting attacked, the rate you get attacked, and how much you are getting raped by your opponent. When this passes a certain point you can unleash your ultra attack for massive damage. They are usually similar to your Super attack, but do more damage.

Because of all the new super attacks and such, playing old school style tends to throw people off because they expect you to unleash something. Although, they are fun to unleash on a computer when you are losing and bringing it to a level playing field. Akuma's is a tad overpowered, but hey, what can you do. Ryu's is a giant hadoken, which I think is crappy since they are so easy to dodge/block.

Online
No. Just no. They failed on this part. My experience with the online has been foul at best. The lobby is flawed and just doesn't work most of the time. When you finally get to play its laggy and doesn't operate correctly. I can't block when I play, which is kinda important. Of course, my opponent can't either... I pay an arm and a leg for fast internet, so it ain't my end.

Final Thoughts
Overall I think the game is worth getting if you like fighters, you'll be seeing it for awhile. Getting all the characters is annoying, and should have just been allowed from the get go. Online is disappointing, but the offline makes up for it. The stories are just as ridiculous as ever, but we don't care anyway, we just want to see the computer get raped by El Fuerte's slap attack. Slap. Slap. Slap. Slap. Slap. Slap.

Fighter's score: 9/10
Non-Fighter's score: 7/10

Overall Score: 8/10

Street Fighter IV Roster Trailer

Still not too keen on the visual style of this game, as I would have more preferred HD sprites more akin to that of the new King of Fighters title, but it's not up to me. None the less, this new trailer released today by Capcom features Street Fighter IV's entire console roster. Enjoy!

Man, some of those English voices are just ... dreadful. And the dubbing on the 3D Ryu? Ew, that's all I can say. Let's hope the sound of the game doesn't ruin the gameplay.

Street Fighter IV, meet Akuma

A new challenger has been announced for the arcade version of Street Fighter IV, and presumably the home versions as well. It's fan favorite, and brutal boss character, Akuma.

All we have right now is a piece of artwork, but word is you'll be able to fight him if you prove your worth. My guess is he'll be one of the extra playable characters set for the home version of the title.

Considering he's been playable in some way or another in all the recent Street Fighter titles, I don't see a reason not to include him. Now if only I could get some SFIII fighters...

In other Capcom news, the Bionic Commando: Rearmedd Launch Trailer is now up at VFHvideo, which you can see in our handy new side bar!

Multi-platform Games Part One

First of all I would like to say, holy hell, theirs a lot of multi-platform games to cover, so I'll split this up into two or three parts. Second of all... that's it, lets get rollin'!

Mercenaries 2: World In Flames -
Personally, I missed out on the first Mercenaries. Because if the first is anything like the second is looking to be, it must be one amazing game. With a extremely destructible environment, 130 different vehicles, and seamless co-op, Mercenaries 2 is looking amazing. I saw minimal pop-up and no slowdown whatsoever in the gameplay demo, even when a nuke was called in- which by the way caused the biggest explosion I have ever seen in a videogame, and possibly the most impressive. The game seemed to be very physics heavy, with both the environmental objects and with any of the many vehicles involving cars, jetskiis, tanks, motorcycles, and more. All in all, this is looking to be a very entertaining sandbox game.

Street Fighter IV -
While I can't say I'm very impressed with the direction SFIV is taking, I can say that the graphics look extremely impressive, even though the character design kind of... well sucks. Although Street Fighter II fans should find something to be happy about here, as the games playing style is based on SFII, and the complexity has been brought down from three. Sure, simplicity is nice sometimes, but only two buttons are used. That sounds kind of over the line. I'm hoping the gameplay will win me over, but so far this isn't looking like a buy for me, sorry Street Fighter!

Golden Axe: Beast Rider
-
The sequel to a classic, which I used to play all the time, is coming to PS3's and 360's this holiday season, and it looks quite fun. Featuring five ride-able beasts with differing strengths and weaknesses, you'll be able to tear through the enemies limb for limb. That's right, dismemberment and a M-rating! Anyone who has played Ninja Gaiden 2 can testify as to how satisfying that can be if done right. But, my one hope for this game is that you get to tear into those damn little dwarfs. While they are confirmed to return in this game, the tearing into them part is not.

Borderlands -
Now this is one of the best surprises from this years E3. I heard about this quite a long time ago, but never saw any real details or screens or anything and it just kind of vanished for a year or two. Then this year it was shown off in a gameplay demo, and wow, it is amazing. If I had to explain I would say Diablo/Oblivion/Fallout 3. Yeah, that is a force to be reckoned with. Co-op with up to 4 players, and over 500,000 weapons. (Yeah you heard me right. All different, some with elemental effects, other with just plain awesomeness imbued into them.) It seriously is looking like a must have. The game is set in a apocalyptic world and has a sort of Mad Max-like vibe. You and your friends can hop in a vehicle and travel the lands, or just go exploring in minds and whatnot. Level up yourself overall, and in weapon categories and fight even stronger monsters. Blow people in half with shotguns (yeah, you can. Sold yet?). Fight bandits, or even alien wildlife. This is looking extremely expansive, and is already a day one buy for me.

Left 4 Dead -
Not much new to share about the new zombie game from valve. Still looks like a load of fun. 4-player co-op, split screen, and zombies. You cannot go wrong with that. Added with the new character models and the creepy new expansive, yet claustrophobic forest environment and you have yourself a game that's looking even more fleshed out and fun than ever. Watch for it this November, the 4th I believe.

Tatsunoko vs Capcom ... in USA?!

Capcom's other fighter in the works, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, may actually be coming to America; at least that's the impression I'm getting. For those of you that don't know, Tatsunoko is the company that produced shows like Gatchaman, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Samurai Pizza Cats; I'm just naming a few that US audiences would know. The reason I really say those is because, well, that's all most Americans really would know, which made a US release of this so unlikely. And the fact that all that licensing could be horrendous.

Personally, I think this game is looking much better, and more along the lines of where Street Fighter IV should be. But, who am I to say, right? Just check out this article over at the Capcom-Unity Blog.

Happy 4th!

Hey everybody, happy Fourth of July! I'm going to be gone most of the day, but before I go I thought I'd leave you with this little anime clip from Street Fighter IV. It's complete gorgeous, seriously, it single-handedly has revived my interest in SFIV. I don't care if the character designs are completely hideous (oh so hideous!) if I have a chance of participating in something half as beautiful as that I'll totally buy it.

Street Fighter HD Beta footage

Via Capcom's Press Center comes the first footage of the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix Beta (that's a mouthful!), which is only available to Xbox 360 users after downloading the full version of Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3. So that pretty much leaves us Playstation 3 owners, who also can purchase Wolf of the Battlefield mind you, in the dust. Anyways, this is the "Long Version" of the footage, the short was available but I figured this would be more worth it.

The game does look nice though. And I want to say that I still think Guilty Gear looks better, but they also chose a very simple looking stage and identical characters for the Beta. I'm sure if I got to see Dhalsim vs. T. Hawk in Las Vegas it would be a much different looking game, and probably for the better.

Captivate 08 Media

Capcom held a press conference today highlighting both new and known titles. Such titles included Street Fighter IV, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Resident Evil 5; as well as new games like NeoPets: Puzzle Adventure and Spyborgs. I've selected a few pieces of media that i thought were interesting, enjoy!

New Street Fighter IV trailer Please, try to ignore the guy on the megaphone that rambles on for the first half of this. Otherwise, in motion this game looks great, as expected.

New Resident Evil 5 screen and artwork

Simply stunning, and scary as all Hell.

The artwork is fabulous as well

New Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix screens

Street Fighter IV website launches

Just saw the commercial on CBS, as reported earlier. And with in the commercial it says to go to StreetFighter.com , once there you will be greeted by an extended version of the commercial, with a nostalgic choice of music (Faith No More's Epic) for 90's alternative fans, which is fitting for Street Fighter's height of popularity was the 90's. While there you can also view a highly styled video of Chun Li vs newcomer Crimson Viper; as well as the original trailer of Ryu vs. Ken. There's also artwork scan, a blog for the new Chun Li movie and more! There's a "hidden" feature to the site too, hidden because it' s the only thing at the bottom of the page; what it is is a fight generator, pick to fighters, and watch them fight. Check it out!

Also, more importantly, the site links to pre-order the game, which redirects to GameStop's website. As you can see, the game has tentative release date of ... February 12, 2009. Maybe it's to avoid any big fall titles... are there even any big fall titles?

Does this make you want Street Fighter IV?

Here's the new artwork and a screen for Street Fighter IV's latest newcomer, Rufus. Is this the type of character that you think represents the franchise well? Out of all the possible characters, was a big fat redneck with a bucket of popcorn truly necessary? You tell me, personally i think this was a complete waste of creative talent.

(click to enlarge, as if he wasn't fat enough...)

I'll admit it though, while the idea of an obese slob coming into the Street Fighter world bothers me, it cannot be denied how great this game looks graphically. It's pretty stunning for what is essentially a 2D experience. And I can imagine that levels that are as vividly lit as this must look even more stunning in motion.

First Street Fighter IV commercial to air...

Just got this in my e-mail:

"FIRST STREET FIGHTER IV COMMERCIAL TO AIR DURING CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS MIXED MARTIAL ARTS (MMA) EVENT
New Trailer, Preorder Campaign Kickoff On StreetFighter.com Immediately Following
When: Saturday, May 31st, 2008 at 10 PM
Where: CBS (check local listings)
URL: http://www.streetfighter.com, http://fight.proelite.com/elitexc-primetime.html

SAN MATEO, CA – May 28, 2008 – Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced that the first television commercial for Street Fighter® IV will debut during the CBS EliteXC Saturday Night Fights mixed martial arts (MMA) event. The EliteXC bout takes place on CBS on Saturday, May 31 at 9 PM EST. Immediately following the bout, the Street Fighter IV trailer will debut on the newly redesigned StreetFighter.com, along with the first chance for gamers to preorder Street Fighter IV for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system exclusively through GamesStop.

Viewers tuning in to catch the first MMA fight to ever air on US broadcast television featuring internet phenomenon Kimbo Slice battling British fighter James “The Colossus” Thompson, will be treated to the network premiere of a 60 second Street Fighter IV trailer and 30 second Street Fighter IV television spots, which feature a combination of stylized CG animation and game play, ending with a call to action that will drive viewers to the newly designed StreetFighter.com website.

On the website, players will be able to watch the new “artistic” trailer, featuring a stylized brawl between Street Fighter favorite Guile and new character Abel along with several other Street Fighter IV trailers and then immediately pre-order the Xbox 360 or PS3 version of the game from GameStop. Fans who pre-order Street Fighter IV will receive a limited edition collectable Street Fighter Tribute artbook, illustrated by top artists from the comic book and video game industries. A countdown currently running on the website tracks the time remaining until the new trailer unlocks."

Yeah, I might consider watching, hell watching Kimbo Slice is much more amusing than watching Dancing With The Stars in order to see the first Wii commercial ( I regret it so very much). And depending on when the game releases, i'll strongly considering pre-ordering the PS3 version, cause if it's Udon's book they're talking about, count me in!

Street Fighter IV roster leaked?

You heard right, via Kotaku i found this link to what seems to be a mobile site or something mobile relating to Street Fighter IV. Scroll down the site a bit and you'll find this:

(click to view the SFIV Mobile site)

Starting the in fourth row from the bottom we see Abel and Crimson Viper, the first two new comers revealed, but go a row lower, and there's that fat guy that was shown a month or so ago, El Fuerte... and then it gets weird. We;ve got some wimpy bitch in a rice-hat, a guy in a suit, some woman, an older black man, some dude with a pony tail, and some other guy with glasses. Whatever these are I sure hope they're not characters; and if they are? Well, i'm sorry but Capcom needs to find better character designers, cause thats just sad. You'd hope that maybe, just maybe, it wasn't just a 3D Street Fighter II with a bunch of reject, we have Street Fighter EX for that. Maybe some of the newcomers from Street Fighter III or even Alpha would've been nice to include? Oh, here's a good thought, how's about never going 3D because of EX... oh wait, too late for that.
